Some hardwoods (Hard Maple, for example) are difficult to stain and should only be stained by professionals.

Notes:

Alder: Light brown with a yellow or reddish tinge.

Hickory: The sapwood of Hickory is white, tinged with fine brown lines while the heartwood is pale to reddish brown. Both colors may be evident in your product.

Poplar: Stain grade poplar will contain creamy white sapwood while the heartwood will vary from pale yellowish brown to olive green. The green color in the heartwood will tend to darken on exposure to light and turn brown.
